LexisNexis is the new name for Butterworths Ireland, which was formed in 1988 as a result of the acquisition by Butterworths of Professional Books Limited (established in the early 1970s). Since April 2003, we have incorporated LexisNexis Professional - the world's largest database - reinforcing our alignment with LexisNexis UK, France, Germany and Benelux, and with LexisNexis in the US.

Our sister company LexisNexis UK, which is closely integrated with the Irish company, now incorporates Butterworths, Tolley and IRS Eclipse. Butterworths was founded by Henry Butterworth in 1818 and has been at the forefront of innovative law publishing across the globe for over 180 years. Tolley was founded by Charles Tolley in 1916 and has built an enviable reputation as a major publisher of tax reference works in the UK. More recently, Tolley has expanded its publishing activities to cover areas of legal regulation. IRS Eclipse is a publisher and conference organiser synonymous with excellence in employment law, personnel, health & safety and pensions.
