Dirk Willer holds a PhD in economics from the London School of Economics. He has been involved with emerging markets since 1994, first on the policy side as a consultant to the Russian government in 1994, and later at the IMF. Since 1997 he has been a strategist or portfolio manager on the buy and sell-side and, for the last 14 years he has been at Citi – the largest trader of emerging market currencies – first as the Latin American local market strategist and since 2013 as the global head of emerging market fixed income strategy. Over that time Dirk has built a very strong track record, both with trade ideas for hedge funds and with his bond portfolio for real money funds. The former has a sharp ratio of above 1.5 since 2003, and the latter has, on average, outperformed the index by more than 100bp per year since 2012. The flagship reports get read by up to 4000 readers. Dirk and his team were ranked first by the institutional investor survey in 2016 and 2018. He is frequently quoted by Bloomberg, Reuters, and various news media, and has appeared on Bloomberg and Reuters TV.
Trading fixed income and fx in emerging markets – a practitioner’s guide Ebook
Trading Fixed Income in Emerging Markets explains how to maximize profits trading the large and fast-growing emerging markets. Written by practitioners for practitioners, it covers all three fixed income asset classes: EMFX, EM local rates and EM credit. It aims to provide tools that can immediately be used, rather than to be overly academic. It also gives special emphasis on the impact of the global macro cycle on EM investing and the impact of the rise of China and its fixed income markets. The book is heavily data-driven, in that every trading rule is thoroughly back-tested over the last 10+ years. A secondary emphasis is on case studies of trades that illustrate how markets typically behave in certain situations and how to profit from such regularities. It focuses both on how to trade the business cycle and on how to trade many typical emerging market events (elections, intervention, capital controls etc), and also covers portfolio construction, how to apply ESG principles to EM and how the authors see the future of EM investing in a world of big data and machine learning.
